APR and Apapeki Cyuru won the men and women’s title in the inaugural Genocide memorial handball tournament held over the weekend at Kimisagara Youth Centre.
The army team beat archrivals and league champions Police 24-23 in a pulsating final, Apapeki Cyuru overcame Gorillas 19-18 to win the women’s title.
The first edition attracted 12 local clubs, eight for men, divided into two groups and four in the women category. Group One was made up of Gicumbi, Zaza, APR and Nyakabanda, while Group Two included E.S Kigoma, K.I.E, Police and National University of Rwanda. The women’s teams comprised of E.S Mukingi, Apapeki Cyuru, Gorillas and G.S Mwendo.
Men’s winners, APR reached the final after seeing off favourites Gicumbi 31-27 in semi-finals, while Police reached the final after beating E.S Kigoma 26-22.
The women’s competition started in the semi-final with the eventual winners Apapeki Cyuru brushing aside E.S Mukingi and Gorillas beating G.S Mwendo.
The tournament was organised by the Rwanda Handball federation with support from CNLG, Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) and the Ministry of Sports and Culture.
